0. Introduction.

The College started up an international exchange scheme in 1993 as part of the ERASMUS program, and nowadays we send students to many universities in Germany, Britain, Ireland, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Italy.
A considerable number of our students take five semesters at the College and then go abroad to do their final thesis. We strongly encourage foreign students to consider the possibility of carrying out similar research projects at our center.
Feel free to contact us if you need any further information.

1. An overview of UPC.

The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) is a public institution created in 1971 by grouping together several existing schools of higher technical education. UPC has various sites including the campuses of Barcelona, Manresa, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Castelldefels, Terrasssa and Vilanova i la Geltrú.
UPC has an academic staff of over 2,400, more than 1200 administrative staff and some 30,000 students. It has 15 schools, 7 affiliated schools, 40 academic departments, and 3 research institutes. UPC offers 40 degree and diploma courses, in Architecture, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications Engineering, Naval Engineering, Mathematics & Statistics, Optics & Optometry, Topography, Photography, Agricultural Engineering, Business Administration, Building Engineering, and many more.

2. The Technical College of Vilanova i la Geltrú.

The Escola Universitària Politècnica or Technical College of Vilanova i la Geltrú (EUPVG) has a great historical heritage. It was founded in 1901 as a school offering courses in theory and practical tuition in arts and crafts. In 1972 it became part of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
Currently, the campus has four buildings. The main building, which houses all the offices, administrative services, refectory, laboratories, computer center and some of the classrooms, is situated opposite the train station.
At present, the College has more than 2,000 students, with a staff of 190 lecturers and professors, distributed among 18 academic departments, and 40 administrative staff.

3. Courses.

The Technical College of Vilanova i la Geltrú offers six different diplomas, each six semesters long.

1. Computer Science Engineering.
2. Telecommunications Engineering.
3. Electronic Engineering .
4. Mechanical Engineering.
5. Chemical Engineering.
6. Electrical Engineering.

The subjects are grouped into fall and spring semesters. The fall semester runs from September to February, and the spring semester from March to July (dates may change a little from year to year). Holiday breaks are at Christmas, at Easter and in the summer (mid July to the end of August).
For each diploma, a final thesis must be presented. This final thesis appears as a subject under the course descriptions, and must be done during the last semester. The final thesis may be completed by the student within the College itself, in another university or research institute, or in a company. The student is required to submit the work in written form and also to make an oral presentation to a panel of College lecturers and professors. This panel assigns the student a grade based on the oral presentation and the document of the final thesis.
Lectures are in Catalan and Spanish, but final thesis can be presented in other languages. Usually a Spanish speaker will not take more than two weeks to fully understand Catalan. Please ask for free Catalan courses at the University.

4. College services and Facilities.

Library. On a 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM schedule, the college's library gives support to the information needs for research and learning of the members of the community. It has at its disposal approximately 15000 volumes and many CD collections, as well as an area for self training, with the corresponding resources. Full-text versions of many technical journals, including all of IEEE publications, can be accessed online. The library system also enables documents and volumes to be tracked and borrowed from other libraries of the UPC. Additionally it has access to the Online Catalogue (OPAC) available throughout the university and accessible world-wide and to online data bases and CD-ROMs. Seminars and trainings sessions are offered for new students, but the library staff will be happy to help you with any information enquiry you may have.

Accommodation. There is a new student residence just in front of the College, with very comfortable rooms and a nice studying atmosphere. The prices range from approximately 200 € for double rooms to 300 € for individual rooms. The residence also counts with some common facilites such as a study room, TV rooms and a laundry room. Both the train station and the center of the town are at walking distance (~ 5 minutes) from the residence. As Vilanova is a major tourist summer resort, it is easy to find apartments out of the vacation period, which can be shared, if desired, with other students. For students who prefer this type of accommodation, we usually make a reservation for one week in a nearby hostel, and help them find a suitable place for them to live during their first week in Vilanova.

Computer Center. Our computer center features several servers running under Windows, Novell and Unix. They serve nearly 100 workstations distributed in eight computer rooms, and they provide network access to the academic and administrative staff.

Labs. Besides the computer rooms, over a dozen specialized labs give service to the teaching needs of the different subjects. Many of the labs are administered in a centralized way, while others are associated with an academic departament. You can find more information about the former here.

The Technical Research Center. The CTVG (Technical Research Center of Vilanova i la Geltrú) is an applied research and business service centre that combines many of the research, development and technology transfer activities of the EUPVG. It offers the possibility of developing a final thesis project closely related to an industry or development problem.

5. The town of Vilanova i la Geltrú.

Vilanova i la Geltrú has a population of 50,000 and is the capital of the Garraf county. It is a coastal town with wonderful sunny beaches, just half an hour south of Barcelona and near the major tourist resort of Sitges. The visitor is made very welcome in Vilanova, where culture, gastronomy, leisure and shopping are present in equal amounts. It is a pleasant town, conducive to quiet and leisure, with a Mediterranean approach to life and time.
Vilanova has a wide range of attractive facilities, including several beaches, a marina, the sea-front promenade, and so on. We have pleasant Mediterranean weather, with little rain, a lot of sun, and temperatures ranging between 35º Celsius in summertime and a mild 10º in the winter.

Festivities. Over the year we have several festivals and traditions, eminently the famous Carnival in February, which you are bound to enjoy. There's no secret to taking part in these festivities; it's just a matter of trying…

Gastronomy. Our cuisine is based on fresh fish and shellfish caught at sea, and all our best dishes include fresh fish. The tradition and knowledge of our fisherfolk, handed down from generation to generation, has provided our gastronomy with dishes that are well known throughout Catalonia, such us bull de tonyina, all cremat, rossejat, espineta, and the most popular dish, xató.

Culture and curiosities. The town offers a wide range of choices: the Maritime Curiosities Museum, Roig Toqués Museum (sea museum), the Can Papiol Romantic Museum, Victor Balaguer Museum, Masia Cabanyes, the Railway Museum, the church of Santa Maria.

6. How to get to Vilanova.

By train. There is a train which links Barcelona to Vilanova. Trains leave Barcelona every 20 minutes (every 8 minutes during peak periods), taking about 30 minutes to reach Vilanova. If coming from Barcelona international airport, the best way to get to Vilanova is to take the train as far as El Prat de Llobregat, which is the first stop. From there, take any of the trains going in the opposite direction, towards Vilanova i la Geltrú. By car. The C-246 road links Barcelona to Vilanova via the scenic coast. The fast A-16 motorway also links Barcelona to Vilanova more directly; an alternative route is to take the N-340 to Vilafranca del Penedès and from there the C-244 to Vilanova.
